It looks like Antoine Triplett is being presented as the good counterpart to Ward’s bad - when Triplett was first introduced, he was working with Garrett (as Ward had), and was mildly antagonistic to the team, even commenting to Ward that if he had a chance to avenge his dead teammembers by shooting the Clairvoyant, he would… followed by Ward shooting the fake-Clairvoyant.
Of course, later we learn that Garrett and Ward are on the side of Evil, meaning that in a divide-and-conquer attempt, Triplett was more or less set up to keep him suspicious of the real good guys and on a wrong footing with them. (The fact that Triplett is a legacy recruit whose grandfather was a Howling Commando may be a part of the reason Garrett decided not to even try to recruit him for HYDRA, but Triplett would’ve also made a useful smokescreen if kept ignorant, precisely because he was clearly loyal to SHIELD. Also, let’s not forget that Garrett chooses to recruit Ward, but basically enslaves Akela Amador and Mike Peterson.)
What’s most striking later, when Triplett has joined the team, is how open he is compared to Ward. He shows emotions fairly openly (and in a wide range), but we also find out that he’s read the Moby Dick at some point (in a way that implies he’s read a lot of literary fiction), likes junk food, and he’s a total geek over old spy gadgets (and shy about it, downplaying his enthusiasm until Coulson has a geekgasm and Triplett realises that he’s in the presence of a kindred spirit - making him comfortable enough to crack bad jokes when they storm the base together later. It’s adorable. In fact, so adorable they made Melinda May smile with fondness for these dorks for a second, which should tell you how adorable it is.)
Those are all small, personal and insignificant things - but they’re all things we still don’t know about Ward, whose Tragic Past is well-known, but seriously, we don’t even know if he likes dogs in general, or if he just liked Buddy in specific because they spent so much time together. With Ward, it’s all mission-critical or Sweeping Drama, with no room for personality. We are only starting to get to know Triplett, and he’s already much more of an independent person than Ward. (He also appears to have a wider medical/technical skill-set than Ward, just by the by.)
Which is a good sign for the next season, because I think we’ve barely scratched the surface of Antoine Triplett, and the glimpses so far look pretty interesting.
Fucking cards against humanity, man.
